H1N1 elevated to Level 1

On Wednesday, Kirkwood Community College officially moved to Level 1 (elevated awareness) in accordance with the college's Pandemic Influenza Policy. According to an announcement in Tempo, Kirkwood's internal newsletter, Melissa Jensen, Emergency Services director said, "The current situation at Kirkwood is no more serious than any place else in the country.

Kirkwood Community College Theatre's production of "Guys & Dolls" is a sure thing. A comedy about New York night life in the 1930s, the musical was adapted for the stage by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows from a short story written by Damon Runyon in 1933.

Partners in education

The Kirkwood Community College Jones Regional Education Center opened its doors this fall to 174 students. Located along Highway 151 in Monticello, the center is on eight acres donated by the Lloyd and Joyce Welter family of Monticello. The center, which began construction in October 2008, is 32,000 square feet and cost a little more than $6 million to build, according to Kristy Black, Jones and Cedar counties director.

Starting from a concrete shell, Kirkwood Community College interior design students competed to renovate an urban loft in downtown Cedar Rapids. A layout by Laura Shuckmann-Gluck, a second-year interior design major, was selected as the winning entry out of 21 submitted.

Art instructor Doug Hall recently celebrated his 40th year at Kirkwood Community College Hall has taught many classes including painting, drawing and his favorite, printmaking. Hall received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa, where he worked as an assistant to the famous printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky Hall said Kirkwood has changed a lot in 40 years.

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy is holding public hearings to weigh the pros and cons of allowing marijuana for medical uses. When the meetings end Nov. 4, the board will recommend to the Iowa Legislature whether the drug should be reclassified as a Schedule 2 drug, making it available for treatment of chronic pain.

The Kirkwood Community College facilities department doesn't receive the recognition it deserves. Its workers are sometimes seen as the "bad guys" when it comes to upholding campus rules. But without them the campus wouldn't be able to function. Most students are unaware of everything for which the department is responsible.

"Milagro del Dia: The Daily Miracle" is on display in Kirkwood's Iowa Hall Gallery through Nov. 6. The collection contains embroidered quilts, cloth works and photos that reflect the lives of Mexican women. Susan Chrysler White of the University of Iowa assembled the exhibit.

Eagles clinch divisional crown

Riding a wave of success, the Kirkwood volleyball team is heading into the postseason with a target on their backs. With a 29-8 record and a national ranking, the Eagles will take to the court in the Region 11 tournament to prove they are worth the hype.
