Free sporting items are available to students who join the Eagles Nest, the official student cheering section at Kirkwood.

What is a great way to become involved, make friends and show school spirit for Kirkwood Community College? The Eagles Nest. The Eagles Nest is the official Kirkwood student cheering section at all college-sporting events, including volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball.

Any student enrolled at Kirkwood is eligible to join the Eagles Nest, plus the membership is free.

When students become members, they receive a Kirkwood Eagles Nest official T-shirt, a variety of sports paraphernalia for game days and sports teams to support, said Seth Vander Tuig, Student Life coordinator. He also said by joining the Eagles Nest students have the opportunity to make new friends.

Becoming involved with the Eagles Nest is easy, according to Vander Tuig. Students can go to the Web site, www.kirkwood.edu, and type in "eagles nest."

There is a sign-up page that explains how to get started. Students can also become a fan on Facebook and be kept up to date with all the sporting events going on in Johnson Hall. Eagles Nest has "a little over 200 fans on Facebook, and 75 to 80 students have signed up online," said Vander Tuig.

This has been an unofficial club for many years. "Student Life has really stepped up a notch in the past three to four years. It has been a very positive influence on our athletic department," said Doug Wagemester, athletic director.

On July 28 the Eagles Nest became official, allowing people to sign up and receive sporting gear, including a Kirkwood foam hat, a foam finger, a megaphone, a blue and white wig, a pompon and a Kirkwood banner.
