Tip your caps: Kirkwood graduation is May 13

With the spring semester coming to an end, the next step for many students is graduation. Kirkwood will celebrate commencement May 13 at 10 a.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids for its 2005-2006 graduates and candidates for graduation. According to Enrollment Services, students who complete their programs in the fall, spring and summer terms are invited and encouraged to attend the May ceremony.

Iowa legislature paying the bills

Many students turn a blind eye to events at the Iowa legislature until a law is passed that increases traffic fines. Throughout this legislative session, however, a proposal has been on the table worth the attention of all community college students. The proposal, made by 15 community colleges, calls for an increase in state general aid to the schools by $11.

Flu the coop: Avian Influenza spreads

The presence of Avian Influenza is causing a great deal of concern across the globe. Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, is a strain of Influenza A that infects birds and has recently started to spread to humans. Bird flu commonly spreads among birds in several forms and has been known to transmit to humans.

Ken and J.J. Ramberg recently developed GoodSearch.com and GoodSearch.net, an innovation in Web search technology to help to fund charities and other nonprofit organizations. The concept is simple: Advertisers pay GoodSearch.com for every search and GoodSearch donates 50 percent of its revenue - about one cent per search - to charities and other nonprofit organizations designated by the searcher.

Holocaust survivor Elane Geller will be telling her life story at 11 a.m. April 25, in room 243 Cedar Hall. It is free and open to the public. Geller was just a little girl when the Nazis invaded Poland, killed her mother and her grandparents and took her to a series of concentration camps, including Bergen-Belson.

Kirkwood's global boundaries grow

This summer, Kirkwood will host the Community Colleges for International Development 2006 Summer Institute at the Cedar Rapids' Marriott Hotel. The institute is a two- three- day educational workshop by the CCID. "Building the Community College's Global Capacity" is the focus of this year's Summer Institute, held July 22-24.

Former Kirkwood student faces two first degree murder charges

Kyle Anthony Marin turned self in; $1 millon bond set for each charge

CEDAR RAPIDS - A 19-year-old North Liberty man is being held at the Linn County Jail on a $1 million cash bond after being charged with two counts of first degree murder. Kyle Anthony Marin, a former Kirkwood Community College student, turned himself in to the Linn County Sheriff at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday after allegedly stabbing two 18-year-old female Kirkwood students.

Renovations at Kirkwood announced

Keeping a college updated takes a lot of money and a lot of renovation. Kirkwood Community College has several plans for renovation in the coming year with a total cost estimating around $3 to $4 million. Director of Facilities, Tom Kaldenberg, gave the specifics on the projects.
