"In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame it's inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law - to pursue natural justice. This is not vengeance; vengeance is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No. Not vengeance. Punishment." - Frank Castle, the Punisher
In this Marvel comic adaptation from Jonathan Hensleigh (Hulk - 2003), Thomas Jane portrays the infamous character Frank Castle as a CIA agent on his last mission: undercover as a Russian illegal arms dealer selling guns to Howard Saint's son. Saint is played by John Travolta. In an array of confusion, weapons are fired and Saint's son is killed.
Distraught, Saint discovers the Russian dealer who was also killed in the gunfire is in fact alive. Saint dispatches his goons led by his main man Quentin Glass (Will Patton) to avenge his son's murderer. They succeed, killing Castle's family at a reunion in Puerto Rico and leave him hanging onto life by a limb. Frank Castle dies but The Punisher is born.
The movie sticks closely to the comic book, unlike many other adaptations and has a good number of tricks up its sleeve. Other appearances include Rebecca Romijn - Stamos (X-Men, X2), Ben Foster (HBO's Six Feet Under) and a special guest fight with former pro - wrestler Kevin Nash.
DVD extras include: The Punisher stunts, The Punisher origins, On the set of The Punisher, music video: "Step Up" performed by Drowning Pool. Sneak peek: The Punisher video game, interview with the cover artist, deleted scenes and commentary and mini-comic prologue of The Punisher, available only with the purchase of the DVD.
