The Kirkwood Community College baseball team is ready for another winning season. After going 40-20 in the 2003-2004 season the Eagles are looking to improve their record in the 2004-2005 season. They still have a long path to travel if they want to claim the National Championship title.
The Eagles have 35 players on the team this year. Of those 35, nine are returning, three of which are pitchers. These returning players will help the Eagles with a team goal of beating their arch rival, Iowa Central.
Head Baseball Coach John Lewis will be entering his 26th season for the Eagles, taking his 26th chance at the national championship.
Lewis has come close in the past by placing 8th in 1993, 2nd in 1995, 3rd in 1998 and 5th in 1999 in the nation.
Last season Lewis received his 850th win. Assistant Coach Adam Sadler said Lewis will coach baseball as long as he has the passion for it, estimating another decade.
With the return of a well-conditioned coaching staff the Eagles baseball team will have the right techniques and skills at their fingertips for a promising season.
The Kirkwood baseball team began their season with a highlight of playing in Veterans Memorial Stadium against the Ontario Blue Jays, a team full of well rounded high school baseball players.
The fall season started on Sept. 8 and will end Oct. 23.
