Sheri Koch's pre-school class is taking Bob the Builder to a whole new level this week.
Each week at Kirkwood Kids, teachers are encouraged to pick a theme for their classroom.
Koch's class is learning about construction this week. They are learning about who construction workers are, where they work and the kinds of jobs they do everyday.
To give the students a more hands on experience, Koch built a construction site in their classroom equipped with yellow tape for the "construction zone" and building blocks for the kids to build whatever they choose.
"This really gives the students an opportunity to put what they've learned to use, and get a chance to do it themselves," said Koch.
Another class is learning about animals that live in cold climates, so the teacher brought in snow from outside and put plastic animals such as penguins and polar bears in the snow for the students to play with.
Kirkwood Kids is a learning center for ages 2 months to 5 years. It's not limited to only children of Kirkwood staff and students, they also accept children from the community.
Sue Lovik, curriculum coordinator, explained the program as developmentally appropriate for each age group.
"We offer activities such as art projects, literacy activities and dramatic play for each group."
Students also have the opportunity to go on field trips throughout the year. This upcoming semester kids are looking forward to visiting the farm on Kirkwood's campus.
"We really like to utilize the campus, because it has so much to offer us," said Lovik. "We've gone to places like the cafeteria so the students can see where all the food is made, and to the truck driving range where students got the opportunity to ride in the semis."
Staff members at Kirkwood Kids are looking forward to another exciting semester and their upcoming Summer Day Program which they offer for ages 5-12.
