Despite the success of Kirkwood Community College's volleyball program since head coach DeAnn Woodin took over, Kirkwood is now looking for a new coach.
The decision to terminate Woodin's contract was made official during Kirkwood's Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 16. Woodin's contract was terminated because of her performance as wellness coordinator, said Kirkwood Community College's President Mick Starcevich.
He explained Woodin had two different contracts, one for the head coach position and one for the wellness coordinator position.
Although Kirkwood's board members were pleased with her performance as head coach, she was dismissed for her performance as wellness coordinator. Starcevich commented the board had to approve the termination of her contract although he made the recommendation. Fifteen volleyball players attended the board meeting to address the board about how they wanted Woodin to remain head coach. Starcevich commented the volleyball players were the first to know Woodin's contract was terminated. Starcevich added he spoke with the volleyball players after the board meeting to explain Woodin was let go because of her work performance at the rec center.
Starcevich said Woodin was offered a part time position as head volleyball coach but she declined. "I'd like to stay but I just couldn't afford to continue working part-time," Woodin said.
"She is a very good coach but we made this decision because of her rec center performance," Starcevich said.
"It wasn't my ultimate decision. I think there are a lot of great people at Kirkwood and I enjoyed working there and the success of the volleyball team," Woodin said. Yet in spite of these facts Kirkwood administrators and Woodin were not able to reach an agreement.
Kirkwood plans to fill both the wellness coordinator and head volleyball coach positions. Kirkwood will offer the position of head volleyball coach with either part-time or full-time responsibilities. Woodin commented she noticed Kirkwood was offering a full-time position with teaching responsibilities and added she planned to reapply for the full-time position. Starcevich remarked that Kirkwood has received applications for the position.
Starcevich said the he is concerned about losing the volleyball head coach at this time of the school year. Starcevich said they were worried about the students who are planning to transfer because Kirkwood wants to help them in the transfer process so they can continue to play volleyball. He said he is also worried about the returning students because they want the students to stay with the programe. He added he's concerned about the recruited students because Woodin has already done a lot of work and he needs to find out if the students accepted because of the school or Woodin.
Starcevich said coaches with part-time positions are just as common as coaches holding full-time positions. The head coach before Woodin had a full time position before leaving to work at another college.
