Kirkwood Community College students have 56 days to get their job applications submitted, schedule an interview, complete their resume and cover letter and mentally prepare for 25 minutes that could make or break their future.
On April 13, SIFE is hosting it's first annual Job Fair in Johnson Hall, where students have an opportunity to meet, talk and interview with prospective employers throughout the Cedar Rapids area.
" The motivation for this particular event came about last fall when I was talking with one of my [former] SIFE teammates that graduated in the spring of 2004...and she had no luck whatsoever finding a job at all," said Treasurer of SIFE Carla Hilton. "So I thought about it for a while and said to our SIFE adviser Bob Walker that instead of just having a resume class [to prepare students for the job market], I'm going all the way."
Since last fall, when SIFE's Job Fair was merely ideas on paper, the club members have organized the entire event. From employers and student workshops to dates and times, SIFE members have the details planned for perfection.
Just as SIFE members had to plan the event itself, students wishing to attend the Job Fair are strongly recommended to also pre-plan by attending workshops to prepare them for an interview. First, all students who plan to attend the Job Fair must sign up during the sign-up days, where they will chose either one or several employers and interview times.
"We do have some workshops that students really need to attend if they want to interview and be successful at it," said Hilton. Professor and Counselor of Student Development Morris Pounds will be instructing several workshops directed for student success. Workshops focus on job applications, interviewing and resume building. Students are strongly recommended to attend at least one resume-building workshop.
"Resume appearance changes all the time, along with how to interview, what to wear and so on," said Hilton. "I was amazed and learned new things myself from sitting with Morris."
