"There's no better place to train people for the 21st century workforce than community colleges of America," President George W. Bush said in his opening statements during a speech in Johnson Hall Wednesday, March 30.
Bush started off by explaining that people 55 and over are guaranteed to receive social security checks. It's the younger generations we have to worry about. " It is the job of the President to confront problems like these, not pass them on to future presidents," said Bush. He explained Social Security is a safety net for a lot of citizens and right now there is a hole in the net for future generations and younger workers.
Bush spoke with a panel of local citizens including Dr. Jeff Brown, assistant professor, department of finance at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign; Dennis Bogaards, co-owner, Bogaards Farms, Inc.; Lisa Loech, Nurse at St. Lukes Hospital; Jinny Adams and husband Joe Studer, retired seniors and Chris Knudsen, Kirkwood student. Each talked about Social Security and how it effects their lives.
Knudsen talked about how, as a college student and younger member of society, the issue of Social Security is a bit frightening. "I look at my paychecks and see all the money being taking out but then I hear about this problem and I wonder where all my money is going," said Knudsen. Bush joked how people of Knudsen's generation believe they are more likely to see a UFO than a social security check.
