Colorfully exercising their freedom of speech right, protesters young and old flooded the main entrance to Kirkwood Community College at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Protesters originally expressed their political beliefs on large banners, signs and spray painted t-shirts.
Krista Cousins, Vice President of the Kirkwood Democrats explained why she felt it important to help host this event. "Our protest is about not privatizing social security because it will put our nation five trillion dollars into debt," she said.
Kirkwood student Gina Nichols also helped organize the event. "We originally intended to meet across from Johnson Hall where President Bush delivered his speech. Due to the fact that all protesters weren't of the student body we weren't granted permission for our original location." The license was granted however of an estimated 100 people were relocated to the corner of Kirkwood Blvd. and 66th Ave.
Counter activists also appeared at the gathering prepared to object the protesters. Josh Whitney, was the operating chief of the pro-Bush team. Their total head count was roughly 10 people but that didn't stop them from staying until the crowd of Bush protesters faded out.
Most demonstrators were forced to leave due to a rain storm.
