Ninety-six Kirkwood Community College students were recently inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. On Wednesday, March 9, the new inductees walked across the stage of Ballantyne Auditorium, received a white flower and signed the book as they joined Phi Theta Kappa. The new officers of Phi Theta Kappa were sworn in at the event as well.
To become a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, students must have a 3.5 grade point average and must maintain a 3.4 grade point average once they become a member. Members of Phi Theta Kappa can be active members by attending meetings and completing service projects, or they can be non-active members by maintaining the grade point criteria.
Phi Theta Kappa members participate in activities to help KCC as well as the Cedar Rapids community. Each year the students spend a day doing the "Blair Ditch" project. It invoves cleaning clean a designated ditch near Cedar Rapids. Phi Theta Kappa members also conduct many bake sales at Kirkwood throughout the year. This year's bake sale proceeds are going toward breast cancer aid.
Being a part of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society can be very beneficial to those students involved, noted Phi Theta Kappa Public Relations Representative Courtney Beer. There are many scholarships available to those who hold Phi Theta Kappa status. Members will receive a special stole and tassel when they graduate, as well as a specific Phi Theta Kappa notation on their Kirkwood transcript.
The Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society conducts meetings the first and third Tuesday of every month at 11 a.m. To learn more about becoming a Phi Theta Kappa member, contact Phi Theta Kappa Adviser, Rich Underwood at: rich.underwood@kirkwood.edu.
