Jeremy Donohue, an Iowa native, walked away from the field of 13 as Kirkwood Idol, along with a $300 cash prize. Donohue is a graduate of the Martindale St. Mary High School in Des Moines and a sophomore at Kirkwood studying horticulture.
"I am very happy to be the winner of the KCC idol," Donohue said. "I feel much pride and grateful for my friends who motivated me to participate in the competition."
Emily Greiner, a Kirkwood sophomore and dancer, took second place and a $200 cash prize. Freshman Shizuko Lozano-Davis won third place and a $100 cash prize.
Movin' & Shakin' is hosted by Kirkwood Admissions at the beginning of every fall semester.
"The first Movin' & Shakin' was hosted in 2001," said Admissions Advisor Tera Smith.
"Each year the event has different entertainment provided. During this event, KCC students learn about Kirkwood Clubs and Organizations, part time jobs in the Cedar Rapids area and area businesses. Each year the event grows and more and more students attend," Smith said.
The event is usually sponsored by businesses as a way to build student awareness of their services. This year's event was sponsored by Wells Fargo, Tan World and Ruffalo Cody. Other organizations also present at the event included the National Guard, U.S. Bank, Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.
"I am glad that I attended the Movin' & Shakin' because at the event I was able to meet new friends and open my new bank account with Wells Fargo," said freshman Seanea Kuawogai.
Approximately 500 students attended the event.
