Get involved and make a difference

It wasn't until after I graduated in 1983 that I learned how getting involved in professional organizations would advance my career.
There's no doubt that many of you are one step ahead than me because you are already involved in community and professional organizations and I commend you for this.
When I was at Kirkwood, there weren't opportunities like SIFE.
Nor did I know about the scholarships available from marketing, advertising and communication organizations such as the Advertising Federation of Cedar Rapids (AdFed) to students pursuing any business-related major (from Graphics Design to Public Relations).
The scholarship application form was and still is simple to complete. Free money, what a great concept!
When I was President of AdFed in 2002-2003, our board made presentations sharing information on the advantages of getting involved in AdFed at business-related classrooms at Kirkwood and other area colleges.
These efforts have mushroomed the past two years. AdFed is beginning our second year of a mentorship program that matches students with business professionals.
The application process is easy and the program starts in October. Other benefits of the program noted on the "Students" tab of www.adfedcr.com include:
"Last year's program was such a success that two student mentees left the program with a job in hand and a foot in the right direction thanks to their mentor.
Students also grew from attending AdFed luncheons, networking, office tours, job shadow days, resume and portfolio assistance, career insight and communication skills in the workplace.
While this sounds like a lot, these partnerships only required a minimum of two interactions a month, in person and via phone or e-mail," said Amy Fethke, AdFed education chair.
So what are you waiting for? If you're a business major, now is the time to get involved and make an investment in your future.
We anticipate the program will fill up fast, so take just a few minutes to fill out the simple application at the bottom of the mentorship page.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions. Best wishes for a bright future.
