Coming off of a strong showing at their own Kirkwood Invitational Tournament, the Kirkwood Eagles volleyball team is looking for new lands to conquer this season.
With nine returning starters and a new head coach, Jill Williams, the Eagles have looked solid at the start of the season winning 14 of their first 19 and posting a conference win. Returning players include NJCAA Second Team All-American Darcy Hageman, 2004 Second Team All-Region Jodi Schulte and Honorable Mention Nicole Spree.
With the prospect of returning starters and added depth with the freshman class, the pre-season Division II volleyball coaches' poll placed Kirkwood first in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference above arch rival Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College.
Kirkwood stands at 13-3 and in first place in the division.
Meanwhile, pre-season ninth ranked Marshalltown is in second but has six more losses than the Eagles.
The Eagles dominated Clinton Community College last week with most of Clinton's points originating from the Eagles' mistakes. Kirkwood handled both the competition and expectations in Johnson Hall last weekend with solid wins over Kishwaukee, Southwestern and Iowa Lakes to keep the tournament's hardware at home.
Kirkwood's first meeting with the DMACC Bears will come on Sept. 26. Other big games include the Illinois Central Tournament on Oct. 14 and 15 and the first-round regional tournament, scheduled to begin on Nov. 1.
