Political cronyism has been around as long as there's been a United States. Our first president, that other George W, appointed friend John Jay to be the first Supreme Court Chief Justice. The seventh president, Andrew Jackson, filled his cabinet with his roughneck buddies; it later became known as the "kitchen cabinet.
In Katrina's shadow, another newsworthy event took place this past week - the conformation hearings for Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts. If the Senate approves his nomination, Roberts will become the youngest Supreme Court Justice in almost 200 years and will replace his late mentor, Justice William Rehnquist.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Sept. 7 that he will veto a marriage equality bill as soon as it reaches his desk "out of the respect for the will of the people." The bill passed the Senate and the State Assembly on Sept. 1 and 6, respectively.
One of the many sites devastated by Hurricane Katrina was the Superdome, home to the NFL's New Orleans Saints. Recently, a member of the Superdome committee stated (hastily I might add) that the only way to fix the Superdome was to tear it down and rebuild it.
