As young people enter college, many go from being active athletes to inactive students. In recent years, Kirkwood Community College has attempted to remedy this problem with an active intramural sports program. A total of 17 activities are offered through the intramural program.

Games offered include sand volleyball, flag football, basketball, golf and dodge ball.

The intramural sports program has gained popularity at Kirkwood, with current registrations numbering around 400.

"I'd expect there to be right around 2,000 participants for the whole year," said Rec Center Director Josh Troutman. He went on to say the activities are open to all Kirkwood students and staff members.

Some rules of a few of the games have been changed. Troutman said many of the rules are the same but in flag football, for example, "There are usually higher point values for touchdowns scored by girls."

Players do have some incentive for being a member of the best teams in their field of competition.

Members of championship teams get t-shirts to commemorate the victories and participants in some sports can even have the opportunity to go on to state and regional play to compete against teams from other schools.
