Once again Homer gives idiots and imbeciles everywhere an excuse to be stupid. Lately, when watching sports, I've seen a shocking development take place - the fans are becoming ruder, more disruptive and more idiotic.
This trend began in the summer of 2002 at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, where an old thug taught his son one of life's many lessons . . . how to be a thug. The man, William Ligue, Jr., and his son jumped over the home dugout and beat up Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa. The 54-year-old Gamboa was old enough to be Ligue's father and yet he and his 15-year-old son beat him like a government mule.
Later that year, a Cleveland Browns game had to be stopped with 42 seconds on the clock because fans threw batteries and beer bottles at officials for making a correct call that wasn't in the Browns' favor.
In November 2004, Detroit Pistons fans decided if you can't beat the Pacers just beat them up. The altercation began when a fan hurled a beer at Pacer Ron Artest. The projectile found its mark and Artest retaliated by charging into the crowd to give everyone in the vicinity of the assailant a beating. It didn't stop there as fans ran onto the court and assaulted Pacers players.
Now the latest incident.
During the recent Notre Dame-Michigan football game, Wolverines fans threw cups and pop bottles at the officials for...making the right call. Let me get this straight - you can now hit people for being right? That's nice to know. Maybe the next time my editor is correct I should throw something at her.
This is disgusting behavior. Fans, when you buy a ticket you are required to have some decorum and respect. A sporting event is not an opportunity for you to get drunk and be stupid as in Mr. Simpson's statement. If you are too immature to handle yourself in an appropriate manner, stay at home. Don't pollute a stadium with your stupidity and pointless insulting banter.
