Most people remember growing up and hearing tales of pirates finding buried treasure and sailing off the port bow. Those stories have come true - sort of. Robinson Crusoe Island is a small, remote island off the cost of Chile. The island's name stems from the famous Daniel Defoe novel, based on a true story of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk's five-year abandonment and survival on the island.
Six weeks into the fall semester, many students have many worries - their financial aid hasn't come in yet, having to cram for a major exam and so forth. Other students have a more pressing concern - transferring to a four-year university. "The sooner you find out where you want to transfer to, the better off the student is," said Darin Pint, a Kirkwood academic adviser.
Kirkwood student Jason Larson has a reply to President Bush's call for the nation to conserve gasoline whenever possible. "Sure, if I had more access to alternatives, I would certainly take advantage of that, but the bus doesn't come by my house and I'm too far to walk or ride to school," Larson said.
Over the past years, the Kirkwood facilities department has worked overtime to keep the campus safe and clean. The department is made up of 75 employees and provides maintenance and safety for Kirkwood students and staff. Ten of those 75 employees are also KCC students in the work study program.
