Over the past years, the Kirkwood facilities department has worked overtime to keep the campus safe and clean.

The department is made up of 75 employees and provides maintenance and safety for Kirkwood students and staff.

Ten of those 75 employees are also KCC students in the work study program. Unlike teachers and administrators, facilities employees are working behind the scene - they do not usually work directly with students. They are the ones that keep the area in and around the campus clean and safe.

"Although we are not in direct contact with the students we do assist the students in many other ways, we help students jump start their car, give directions and also unlock their car for a student who must have forgotten their keys in their car," said Tom Kaldenberg, the executive director of facilities.

Since the fall semester began, the facilities department has kept the campus accident free. Speeding and other traffic violations on campus are closely monitored by campus security.

"Our biggest concern right now is the side and cross walk issues," said lead security officer Tom Spartz, "We have noticed that drivers are not stopping to allow students to cross through the cross walk and also students are walking on the main street instead of the side walk.
Spartz described an accident that occurred during the first week of school.

"No one was hurt but a couple of cars were damaged," Spartz said. "The reasons for the accident were closely link to the cross walk issues."

Campus security is asking drivers to stop for students who are trying to cross streets. Students should use the side walk instead of the drive way.
