Six weeks into the fall semester, many students have many worries - their financial aid hasn't come in yet, having to cram for a major exam and so forth.

Other students have a more pressing concern - transferring to a four-year university.

"The sooner you find out where you want to transfer to, the better off the student is," said Darin Pint, a Kirkwood academic adviser.

Out of Kirkwood's 15,000 students, approximately 8,000 students are taking courses to transfer to a four-year university.

"Meet with your adviser to avoid surprises," added academic coordinator Laura Riley, "It can be an easy process, however there are always issues."

In order to transfer to a four-year university, students need to meet certain requirements. The big three state universities students transfer to are: the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Requirements are as follows:

To attend Iowa a student must have a 2.0 GPA and 24 transferable semester credits. Students must meet a foreign language requirement, which is four years of high school, or four semesters of college credit. Iowa does not require a SAT or ACT to transfer.

To attend Iowa State, a student must have a 2.0 GPA and 24 transferable semester hours. ISU does not require ACT or SAT test scores.

UNI does not require ACT or SAT scores. Students need a 2.0 GPA to transfer and also fulfill a foreign language requirement.

If a student is having trouble with transferring decisions or technicalities, they can contact the admissions office at either Kirkwood or the prospective university for details and assistance.
