Students at Kirkwood's Iowa City campus are sharing the benefits of a campus nurse.
In September, over 70 students on the Iowa City campus sought nurse Amy Ganske's assistance. Ganske helped students with everything from testing for tuberculosis to answering general questions about health issues.
Until December 2004, an on-campus nurse was available to Iowa City students through a special grant provided by the University of Iowa's family practice program. That program was cut last year for budget reasons.
Until now, there was no one to help students with health issues or just answer questions.
Some services provided are assessments of illnesses or injuries, distribution of over-the-counter medications for aches and pains and basic first-aid care.
Ganske expects to see a large increase in students entering her office within the coming weeks as the cold and flu season approach. Ganske said she's confident there will be plenty of flu shots to go around this year, after last year's shortage.
"I have talked with our distributor and I was assured there would be no shortages this year. We should start getting those shots around the first week of November," said Ganske.
Student life director Jon Weih said the biggest positive about having Ganske around is for students away from home.
"For those of us who aren't professionals, health issues can pose some tough questions to answer. For those students who are away from home for the first time or just not feeling well, we want them to feel comfortable talking to someone who is a professional," said Weih. "For those who have chronic conditions, like diabetes for example, I think it instills confidence in them knowing she's around at least some of the time."
Planned Parenthood has teamed up with Kirkwood to offer women's health clinics each month at the Iowa City campus. Services include yearly pelvic exams, pap smears and STD testing.
Contact Ganske at (319) 398-5588 for an appointment or stop by to find out more.
Ganske is available Monday and Thursday afternoons from 1 to 4 in room 146.
