Kirkwood Student Productions was founded in the fall of 1990 by students and former Communications Media instructor Rich Underwood. Underwood currently works as a professor of speech.
KSP was founded because students wanted to do more than what the broadcasting program offered at the time.
Originally KSP broadcasted vocal and instrumental jazz concerts in addition to men and women's basketball games. When Underwood took over KSP, he and the students created "Spotlight On Kirkwood," a program that offered a behind the scenes look at college programs and personalities.
By offering Kirkwood students the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience and work in a live atmosphere it gives broadcasting hopefuls an experience that is unmatched by any standards.
Many KSP alumni are contributing to programming aired on a daily basis. One former student, Ron Roush, has his own production company that assists ESPN in broadcasting Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games.
Roush was one of the initial students who worked with Underwood in establishing KSP.
"I'm glad we started it and I'm glad it's still here. I feel very proud of it and my contributions to it and if anything produced by KSP is on I will watch it," said Underwood.
