The Cedar Valley Divide's staff of four has received a National Award from the Community College Humanities Association Annual Literary Magazine Competition in 2005. The literary magazine was the only recipient of the Most Improved award in the Central Division. In order to receive the award the staff is required to submit the most recent issue along with four previous copies to be considered for the honor.
Under English Professor Kevin Nebergall's advising, the literary magazine receives submissions from Kirkwood students, staff and others and chooses the pieces of work to be published based on a student staff appointed criteria. Included in the selections are judgments made upon authenticity, originality and movement. Some of those entering the Divide have gone on to submit and win in other publications.
Nebergall is currently looking for students to enroll in the Editing a Literary Magazine class that involves publishing the Divide. Photographers, artists and writers are encouraged to pursue the class and or submit work for the Divide's next publication. Copies of the award winning Cedar Valley Divide can be picked up in the English Department in Linn Hall.
