A new year has brought in new faces at Kirkwood Student Senate. The group is made up of students representing campus clubs and organizations.
Senators approve new clubs along with their budgets as well as organize campus events and distribute information about them.
The 2005 Student Senate is different than in years past - six people are filling the four coordinating positions. This came after a tie in voting for the senate's public relations coordinator. Members of the senate felt two people could do the job of Senate and Student Life Activity Coordinator better than one.
Jarred Cox is the Senate Meeting Coordinator. He leads weekly meetings, sets agendas, monitors meeting attendance and contacts senators about possible changes.
"It's not the easiest thing to do but I love to serve and help the student body," Cox said. "Keeping things in line is a challenge but I love it."
Josh Ginn and K.C. Brown share the post of Senate Public Relations Coordinator.
"The main reason I ran for a Student Senate office position was to get more involved on campus," Ginn said. "I enjoy working with people and want to be involved as much as I can at Kirkwood."
Ginn and Brown keep the senate current about events on and off campus. They make sure senate promotions are visible and work with senate and student life activity coordinators to promote activities. They also serve as liaisons to the Communiqué.
Kristin Wiegman performs many duties as the Coordinator for Senate Clubs and Organizations. She publishes a monthly newsletter about the activities of clubs and organizations. She follows up with team leaders and organizes the budget process in the spring.
Wiegman said she wanted this position because, "I was looking for an opportunity to advance and better myself and this seemed like a great way to do both."
The two Activity Coordinators are Suzanne Evers and Gina Gerleman.
"I enjoy getting people involved and making new friends in a positive atmosphere," Gerleman said.
Evers and Gerleman promote and facilitate activities such as the Spring Fling dance, Diversity Days and the awards banquet. Right now they are working on a United Way campaign.
"I wanted to use my talents to create events for others to enjoy. I helped out with a few of the events last year and found the experience exciting," Evers said. "I decided I wanted to have more of a behind the scenes role this year."
With the aid of the other senators, Evers and Gerleman are selling raffle tickets to raise money for United Way. Winners will be drawn on Oct. 31.
The six coordinators, along with 11 other senators, will attend the Statewide Leadership Conference in Waterloo, hosted by Hawkeye Community College. They will learn leadership roles and trade ideas with students from 14 community colleges in Iowa. The conference runs Oct. 27 through Oct. 30.
