It's getting close to that time of year again. Every hit, set, spike and pass can make or break you.

For the Kirkwood Community College Eagles volleyball team its time to start focusing on the district tournament. According to Head Coach Jill Williams, the team has to win the district tournament in order to qualify for the national tournament.

Coming off of a big rival win against Des Monies Area Community College (DMACC) the Eagles took three very close games . The score of the first game was 30-26, the second 30-25 and the third and final game ended 30-28. The DMACC win puts the Eagles at 12-1 in the conference and 27-11 overall. That 12-1 mark is good enough to be tied for the first spot in the conference. Although 27-11, Coach Williams would like to have seen the team undefeated at this juncture of the season.

The team has seen many girls step up to play big roles but none has emerged as the sole leader of the team.

"We are the best when we are a complete team," said Williams. Freshman Beth Deutmeyer leads the team in blocks but is followed closely by sophomore Darcy Hageman. Brittany Corkin has 267 digs on the season. That mark is good enough to lead the team. Even though there hasn't been a clear stand out leader on the team, some of the girls have put up some numbers worthy of All-District honors.

With district play starting Nov. 1, the Eagles will more than likely have the number two seed. "Because we lost to Iowa Lakes we should be the number two seed," said Williams. As the records stands now, chances are if the Eagles are the number two seed, they will face either Southeastern Community College or Southwestern Community College in the regional tournament.
