With the winter months fast approaching, various local organizations are asking you to keep the less fortunate in mind.
Food banks across eastern Iowa say the demand for food increases during the holiday season.
College students aren't the first group of people one might think would donate to the less fortunate but that isn't the case at Kirkwood Community College.
"I'm poor, got no money but I still like to try and help others," said Kirkwood student Brandi Hensley.
Other students are echoing that sentiment.
"I've got it pretty good. I can spare a few boxes of food to help others out," said Kirkwood student Kevin Mittan.
There are other ways to help besides donating food. You can donate your time as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and homeless shelters are always looking for volunteer workers during the holiday season.
You can also clean out your closet and donate your old Ninja Turtles and Barbie dolls to Toys for Tots.
Kirkwood student Adam Worton summed up the Kirkwood giving spirit, "It feels good to help people."
