On the morning of Oct. 27 between 4:30 and 5 a.m. a fire ravaged a Kirkwood Courts' apartment building. According to an article in the Oct. 28 issue of the Gazette, Krissy Stillmunkes, who was staying in the apartment where the fire originated, was injured when she jumped from the second story window after she was unable to escape through the front door.

Stillmunkes then went back into the building and notified the other tenants of the fire. Stillmunkes was treated for minor injuries and then released from the hospital, the Gazette reported.

Kirkwood student Josh Doonan said, "At 5 a.m. I woke up because Krissy was pounding on the door getting everyone up."

Cedar Rapids fire investigator Captain Al Brockhon stated, "The fire originated in the living quarters and one person was close to being injured in the fire." The fire came from apartment 6 in Building 53 of the Kirkwood Courts.

The apartment was leased to Kirkwood student Josh Rawson and Christopher Johnson.

The cause of the fire at this time is unknown and is currently under investigation by the Cedar Rapids fire inspectors and State Farm Insurance company.

"With no reasoning for the fire it makes it feel unsafe," commented Kirkwood student and Building 53 resident Catherine Cook.

Donna Coblentz, property manager at Kirkwood Courts, stated, "The apartment is a complete loss and we should have a time table on the repair process at the end of this week."

Kirkwood Courts is an off-campus property so the college has no control over the apartment complex or its tenants.

However, all tenants prior to moving in are required to sign an acknowledgement form stating that they have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher in their apartments.
