Eagle Circle Dorms and College Park Apartments are two examples of apartment complexes near Kirkwood Community College.

The names lead many to believe the complexes are strictly for Kirkwood students but the property management has now made the apartments available to nonstudents.

In the past year, many students have found themselves living near individuals who have discovered the cheap cost of living in the complexes available for rent near campus.

The only concern is these individuals do not attend Kirkwood.

More specifically, housing in Eagle Circle Dorms has become more available and at even cheaper prices.

"It's cheaper than where I lived at before," said non-Kirkwood student Jason Stout. "I'm gone a lot since I work in construction so this location is perfect."

One of Kirkwood's draws in attracting students to live near campus has always been the affordable cost of housing.

However, the general consensus was that only students would use the housing.

That trend is changing.

"All the properties are looking at different options," said Kirkwood Recreation and Housing Services Director Josh Troutman. "These options include opening things up to students or others that live in the area."

According to the student housing section on Kirkwood's official Web site, the latest estimate shows close to 4,000 students currently take advantage of the close housing near campus.

While the apartments are not owned by Kirkwood, the apartment management has a strong working relationship with the college.
New housing is already being built across the street from Eagle Circle Dorms.

What remains to be seen is whether there will be enough students to fill them by the time construction ends.
