The only report of an alleged assault on the Kirkwood Community College campus Oct. 22 was the one that aired on a local television station Oct. 24.

According to Carrie Hendricks, a second year nursing major, on Oct. 22 she was jogging in the early evening near the truck driving range on the south side of the Cedar Rapids campus when a dark colored car pulled over and a passenger in the vehicle asked for directions.

Hendricks said she approached the car to give directions when the driver of the car and the passenger, both males, got out of the vehicle.

According to the 19-year-old woman, one of the men grabbed her by the hair and slammed her face into the hood of the car, while the other male punched her in the face. As a result of the punch, the woman said she fell to the ground. Hendricks said she was able to bite one of the alleged assailants but it was a southbound vehicle on Kirkwood Boulevard that scared the two men back into the car, allowing her to escape.

According to Hendricks, she went back to her Kirkwood Village apartment where she watched television until her roommate, Ashley Soukup, returned early the next morning. At that time, Hendricks said her roommate called campus security who reportedly said they could not do anything. Soukup did not return phone calls from the Communique.
According to Tom Spartz, lead guard for campus security, every call is followed up with a written report. Spartz said campus security did not receive a call regarding any assault on the evening of Oct. 22 or the morning of Oct. 23.

Hendricks told the Communique that Soukup contacted her sister who contacted KCRG, a Cedar Rapids television station. According to the KCRG news script from Oct. 24, Hendricks did not contact the police because "It's just one of those things you don't want a whole lot of people to know. It's kind of like your medical records ... like a personal thing."

Mark Geary, the KCRG reporter covering the story, said during the broadcast that Hendricks had "a bruise on her arm from the attack." Since there has been no report filed with the police and no record of any report filed with campus security, no action has been taken.

In the KCRG news script, Josh Troutman, recreation and housing services director, said, "We're here to help protect their (students) safety but they have to keep us informed. We can't solve a problem if we don't know there's a problem."
