Though the holiday shopping season is ticking away, rest assured. Kirkwood Community College is looking out for you.

Nov. 18 marked the sixth annual Kirkwood Festival of Crafts. Kirkwood staff and community members set up booths and tables in Iowa Hall's Mansfield Center and sold a variety of crafts.

Vendors included 10 Kirkwood affiliated members and 20 from the outside community.

"The fee that we charge for setting up a table or booth goes straight to scholarships," said Shirlee Dietrich, coordinator of clubs and organizations. "This has been one of the best years. We raised $425."

Dietrich said the craft show came about during a brainstorming session to raise money for scholarships and help students out during the gift-giving season.

"We saw a need for students to have a craft show," Dietrich said, "so that students could buy gifts for reasonable prices.

"This truly was one of our better years. The weather was decent and it was on the same day as TGI Friday which brought in 125 students and their parents," Dietrich said. "While the students talked to the advisers the parents had a chance to walk around and see everything we had to offer."

Two of the vendors included Kirkwood staff members Karen Friedrich and Vicki Allen. Both were at the craft show to sell items they make in their spare time.

Friedrich, selling wax-dipped scented stuffies for a side company named Kraft Dog Kandles, said she had no complaints about the day.

"The time was great and the location was even better," said Friedrich.

Vicki Allen, on the other hand, was selling homemade jewelry and found the only problem of the day to be the setup.

"It was a great day and a great location," Allen said. "The only thing I would like to see different is the spacing of similar items. I was setup next to two other jewelry vendors."

Along with many Kirkwood associated vendors sat community vendors, including Rhonda McKibben who sold Avon products.

"This is my first time selling here at Kirkwood but I hope to come back in the future," said McKibben. "I wouldn't mind seeing an event around Mother's Day or sometime in the spring either. I'm sure a lot of these vendors would have items that they could bring as well."

McKibben said she found out about the Festival of Crafts during a recruiting session at Kirkwood in October.

"Student Life does the craft show as a service," Dietrich said. "Feedback is always welcome. We have already been asked to advertise more before the craft show next year so that more students and faculty can bring their items.
