Kirkwood students looking for health assistance have noticed a new face this fall.

Longtime Kirkwood nurse Amy Ganske is still around but another part-time nursing position was created to help serve the Cedar Rapids campus' growing health needs.

Becky Hammond, a registered nurse, began working at Kirkwood in late September.

Her presence has allowed the nurse's office to remain open until 8 p.m. instead of closing at 4 p.m. as it previously did. Hammond also covers Ganske's Cedar Rapids office hours when she works at the Iowa City campus.

Hammond obtained her BSN in 1994 from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She has held many nursing positions since, including working as a delivery room and emergency room nurse. This has prepared her for the emergencies that inevitably happen on campus.

"I'm accustomed to the level of stress," Hammond said.

For six years she was involved in the Young Parents' Network, assisting pregnant students at Metro High School.

"I've always had many things on my plate," Hammond said.

This remains true today. While working part-time at Kirkwood, Hammond is also teaching at Mt. Mercy and working toward her Nursing Education masters degree from Clark College in Dubuque.

"She is very knowledgeable. She has been very nice to work with," said Sandra Paronish, who works with Hammond in Kirkwood's health facility.

Even though being a nurse at Kirkwood might be less stressful than working in an emergency room, it still brings with it specific challenges.

"One of the hardest things has just been learning my way around campus," Hammond said.

With the expanded hours, more students will be able to take advantage of Kirkwood's health services. "I've never been to the campus nurse but I think it's a nice resource to have just in case," said Kirkwood student Cody Nichols.
