The metamorphosis from an Eagle to a Cyclone is a rare occurrence.
This year at Kirkwood Community College, however, sophomore Toccara Ross signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Iowa State University.
"She's got great upside and she provides a very hard match up because of her athleticism and the way she can go outside and inside," said Kirkwood Head Women's Basketball Coach Kim Muhl.
Ross finished second on the team last season in both scoring, with an average of 10.3 points per game, and rebounds, with an average of 5.3 per game. She scored a career high of 19 points against Iowa Lakes.
Ross has lofty goals for her last season at Kirkwood.
"I want to win a national title and I feel it is something we can do," she said.
Ross came to Kirkwood via Davenport Central High School.
Her senior year was filled with accolades, including being named to the Mississippi Athletic Conference First Team and a Quad-City Times All-Metro Second Team selection. Ross led the conference in rebounding with 14.4 and placed third in scoring with 16.3 points per game.
When she graduated she left behind 15 school records in basketball.
Ross said her seasons at Kirkwood have prepared her to play at the next level.
"Athletically it has given me two years to improve my skills so I can help Iowa State right away and academically it helped me get my pre-requisites out of the way so when I transfer I can work on my major right away."
Ross will join the Cyclones basketball team in the fall semester of 2006.
