The last day of class at Kirkwood Community College is May 11. For Kirkwood basketball players it also brings about a transition of either entering the workforce or transferring to a four-year institution.
The men's team, coached by Doug Wagemester, includes six sophomores who will be leaving after this school year. The list includes guard Rodney Jackson, guard Grant Hargett, guard Julius Moor, guard/forward Fred Dudley, guard/forward Shaun Logan, and forward Greg Surmacz. All six are undecided on where to play next but a few Division II schools have recruited both Logan and Dudley.
Logan has received interest from St. Cloud State University and Central Missouri State He is third on the team in points, with an average of 13.6 per game and is first in rebounds with 7.6 per game. Dudley leads the team in points with an average of 15.4 per game and 6.8 boards per game, while hitting 53.6 percent of his total shots and 42.3 percent of his three-point shots.
Hargett averages 11.7 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the floor. He leads the team in three-point shooting with 47.6 percent. Forward Greg Surmacz, standing 6'8", is the tallest Eagle and averages 6.2 points per game and 5.9 boards per game. Guard Julius Moor averages 4.1 points per game.
The women's team, coached by Kim Muhl, will lose seven players after this year, including guard Amy Wold, guard Jenn Angler, forward Whitney Maxey, guard Missy Morrow, forward Toccara Ross, forward Jesse Kleinschmidt and forward Kim DeVries.
Some of the women know where they are heading after Kirkwood, while others are still undecided. Ross will play for the Iowa State Cyclones next year. Kleinschmidt and DeVries will also transfer to Iowa State but not to play basketball. Angler has been looking at Dayton University but she's still undecided as are Wold, Maxey and Morrow.
This year Wold averages 13.2 points per game, 5.7 assists per game and has a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. Currently, Maxey is shooting 54.5 percent from the field and is averaging 2.7 offensive rebounds per game.
Morrow leads the conference in free throw percentage with 88 percent. Ross averages 12 points per game to go along with 6.8 boards and 1.9 steals. She also shoots 84.8 percent from the free throw line.
This year Kleinschmidt is third on the team in steal-to-turnover ratio with 1.5. DeVries averaged 1.5 points per game and 1.4 rebounds per game as a freshman while playing in 22 games.
