One out of every 10 people entering a hospital requires blood and only five percent of healthy Americans donate.

According to the American Red Cross, approximately 40,000 units of blood are used each day in the United States and only 16 million units of blood are collected annually. Shortages of all types of blood often occur during the summer and winter holidays.

Donating blood is a volunteer service that helps thousands of people in a minimal amount of time. Blood donation includes four steps: Medical history, quick physical, donation and snacks. The actual blood collection takes approximately 15 minutes. The entire process, from when a donator signs in to the time they leave, takes about 45 minutes to one hour.

Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital will hold a blood drive in the Marland Room of Iowa Hall, on Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Everyone is welcome to come," said Dodie Euans, campus health administrative assistant intern.

Free juice and cookies are available after donation. Six people will be taken every 15 minutes to donate blood. Time sheets are available to sign up in advance in the campus health department.
