Once again Kirkwood has made a tremendous effort in expanding educational opportunities for student. Last semester, Kirkwood started built a recording studio in Cedar Hall. Now the studio is open and classes are being offered. Taught by Jean-Paul Perrotte, students learn more than just the basics of recording.
Perrotte graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in jazz composition and received his masters in composition from the University of Iowa. Along with the audio recording classes, Perrotte teaches Songwriting, Introduction to Music Theory and guitar lessons.
In the Audio Recording I class, students are taught how to use the program "Pro Tools LE" from Digidesign. "Pro Tools" is a multi-track recording program that is the standard for the recording industry. Students learn how to run the software and have the opportunity to actually work with the recording process. Also taught in the class is how to use Sony's two-track editing program "Sound Forge" and "C.D. Architect."
During the class, students do a variety of projects. One project is creating a 30 second and then a 60 second radio commercial. Using Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in "Pro Tools" for the drums and directly recording bass, guitar and vocals, students can recompose different pop songs.
Students are given two hours a week to go to the MIDI lab and work with "Pro Tools."
In Audio Recording II, students learn how to work in the recording studio with the help of Kirkwood graduate Tucker Burnes.
Burnes worked for Sony Music in New York City and records bands out of his home studio. Audio Recording II has an in depth teaching of the mixing board.
Also in the class, students learn microphone placement for the guitar, bass, piano, keyboard and vocals. Every week, students are allowed two-hours to use the studio to record, mix or just experiment with microphone placement.
