With the spring semester reaching its peak, Kirkwood Community College students are looking at new campus activities to get them in the mood.
At Kirkwood's Iowa City campus, Student Life and the student government plan activities for students. The current director of Student Life is John Weih and the social chair of the student government is Lindsey Hogan.
During March several activities took place on the Iowa City campus. The intramural bowling league was held the first two days of March and a food giveaway was hosted with walking tacos on March 7. Weih said there were not many events planned for March because of Spring Break.
Spring Fling activities begin the week of April 17. Planned events include a battle of the sexes, an army-climbing wall, a clean-up event, cultural events and awards for the Iowa City campus.
"The number of students who participate in these activities vary depending on whether or not they are held during school hours or after school," Hogan said. "During school hours we have 100 -150 people and after school maybe about 50 people," he added.
Hogan said all the planning for these events are done by students with assistance from Weih and math instructor John Dawson. Activities are planned ahead of time, so that according to Hogan "we have enough time to do promos, get the word out and complete prepartion."
Dawson, who is the faculty adviser, noted that he has a fairly small role due to "more students getting involved. That growth is due to an organized government that students are truly invested in."
As for Iowa City Student Life, Weih said "Next year we want to plan more events in advance."
Hogan added, "This is our first year as student government. We are now learning what works and what doesn't."
