"Paul auctioned off the first item of the day, which was difficult for him to do," said Sheryl Cook, Kirkwood's executive secretary to the president, "it was a very touching moment." Cook said four board of trustees and their spouses volunteered at the event, which attracted around 1,000 people.
Glenn's three children provided entertainment when they each auctioned off a batch of caramels in friendly competition. One batch sold for a $200.
"It was a wonderful turnout. I don't know how it could be any better," said Glenn. "It was very humbling."
Live and silent auctions took place simultaneously, featuring a 2007 Polaris 500 Sportsman ATV, one semester's tuition at Kirkwood, nine Welsh Corgi puppies and signed footballs from the University of Iowa and Iowa State teams. Friends of Glenn donated all items for the auction. Additionally, desserts were sold from the Legionnaire Ballroom kitchen to further help with the fund raising.
"It looks like the whole town came out. He has so many friends from around the United States that came to support him," said Mick Starcevich, president of Kirkwood Community College.
"My father knows more people than I hope to meet in my lifetime. It's so cool to see the effect and impact he has had on so many lives," stated Sarah Glenn, daughter of Glenn.
