Local concert venues offer variety of music

Music is a common interest among students and there are many different venues near Cedar Rapids for music lovers to check out live bands.
For students craving a taste of alternative rock, look no further than Iowa City. In a town that has a diverse population, there are many opportunities to hear live music.
One local hotspot is the Picador. Formally called Gabe's Oasis, the Picador, located at 330 E. Washington St., is a bar that features many different acts, ranging from bluegrass to grunge metal.
The interesting aspect about this venue is that the stage is located upstairs. The Picador has also hosted famous acts ranging from Gym Class Heroes to From First To Last; both big name bands in today's music scene.
Other venues that are located in Iowa City are the Hall Mall, located at 114 ½ E. College St. and the Iowa Memorial Union, which is located on the University of Iowa Campus.
In Cedar Rapids, one music venue is Third Street Live. The venue is located on the corner of Third Street and 12th Avenue in downtown Cedar Rapids. The most recent show was Daughtry, who performed on March 30. Chris Daughtry is well known for being the American Idol cast off who started his own band.
Another venue to check out in the area are the U.S. Cellular Center, which features big name shows in an arena atmosphere.
Across the state, the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines offers a large venue for artists. This concert hall has featured a lot of today's most famous music, with acts like AFI and Papa Roach performing respectively.
