Traveling the world is a dream that many students share and dream that is being made possible at Kirkwood Community College through the Study Abroad programs.

The Costa Rica study abroad trip is scheduled for May 14-24 and includes 15 students, ranging in age from 18-86, who will be adventuring to this destination.

Bob Sessions, trip leader and philosophy and humanities professor, stated, "This intense trip will be a strong experience for the students. In the past this trip has changed the lives of several students in substantial ways."

Sessions explained this trip as a life changing experience because students will have a chance to see their own culture and society in relief by viewing the world through the eyes of people in this small, second-world country. He said, "It's hard to describe what a difference being there makes."

Along with receiving six college credits from introduction to ethics and environmental science, students get to participate in a variety of activities. Students will observe a turtle sanctuary and watch baby turtles emerge and crawl to the sea. Participants of this trip will also spend five days in an ecotourism lodge located in a rainforest. Other destinations include visiting the Dole banana plantation, visiting the city of Limon, seeing a local university and interacting with local families. Sessions said other activities will include fine dining, visiting a national museum, shopping and spending time in the capital, San Jose.

Sessions commented how cost can be a major barrier for students. He stated, "If you really know how much people learn in a short time you realize the students who travel with us in May will be getting a terrific bargain at $2,500."

Buenos Aires, Argentina, another Kirkwood study abroad trip scheduled for May 25- June 18, is comparable in price at $2,800. The 12 students signed up for the Buenos Aires trip will be taking Spanish classes as well as learning the culture through everyday experiences.
