Since 1996 April 18 has been observed by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community as the Day of the Silence. Kirkwood students who belong to the Unity Club observed that day by providing information in Cedar Hall.

Brent Gorton, sociology emphasis, made clear the mission of the day and its intended impact.

"The Day of Silence is supposed to be about raising awareness that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (GLBT) doesn't have a lot of representation in popular culture," he said.

Gorton also stated, "There is a lot of discrimination, whether its active discrimination against someone, or passive discrimination against someone. The Day of Silence is about giving them a voice."

To mark the Day of Silence, approximately 50 people stopped by the Unity Club's display to receive black ribbon arm bands.

Gorton said the Day of Silence is also an opportunity to acknowledge the existence of the GLTB community.

Unity is an active club on campus and has 50 members on and off campus. The meetings are scheduled during the activity hour every Tuesday.

Gorton noted one of the main goals of the club is "Gaining better perspective on diversity and what it means to better understand other people's choices. If you don't accept diversity, then you do not accept anyone."

In addition, he added that people interested in coming to the meetings should know that the club does not force anyone to reveal their sexual orientation.
