Around 280 students from Kirkwood Community College dropped their books Friday night and picked up their dress clothes and dancing shoes to head to the Clarion Hotel for a night in New York.

"Late Night New York" was the theme for the 10th annual Kirkwood Awards Banquet, which was held April 13. The Awards Banquet Committee, made up of Kirkwood students Cody Seeley, Laura Olive, Chris Wallace, Alex Kaminski, Kim Putz and Sam Qadi and Student Life Coordinator Shirlee Tschiggfrie, spent most of the day setting up tables and decorating the room where the ceremony was held. According to Putz, the preparations for the ceremony started three months ago and the committee had weekly meetings to brainstorm ideas for table decorations and posters.

Tschiggfrie said that many students complimented the decorations. An archway, made by the Forget-Me-Nots club, with "I love New York" lettering covered the door and a New York skyline was the backdrop for the podium where the awards were given away.

The ceremony started off with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. The Kirkwood Jazz Ensemble and Pat Kettmann, the 2006-2007 Kirkwood Idol, kept the crowd entertained with live music.
The awards ceremony began at approximately 8 p.m. with Kirkwood students and staff receiving awards in categories such as Outstanding Female Club Leader, Outstanding Male Instrumentalist and Outstanding Non-traditional Student. Putz received an award for the Most Outstanding Student Ambassador, along with fellow ambassador Adam Ponsor.

"I was very shocked but excited when I heard our adviser, Tera Smith, announce my name. It made me feel very honored knowing that my fellow ambassadors felt I deserved this award, along with Adam Ponsor," Putz said.

During the awards ceremony, members of Student Senate had the audience members participate in trivia games to win prizes and drawings for door prizes including an MP3 player and a surround sound system.

"I loved seeing all the smiles. All the kids doing the MC like a David Letterman show made it really fun," said Tschiggfrie.

Professional pictures were also offered to students throughout the night by Kirkwood photographer John Schafer. The CD with all the pictures taken during the banquet will be available for $2 in the Student Life Office.

Scorpio Productions ended the night with a dance from 9 p.m. to midnight.
