Recently Shirlee Tschiggfrie was busy helping Kirkwood Community College raise money for a fund-raiser. It was Taco Tuesday and students were outside of Iowa Hall selling tacos and t-shirts. All of the proceeds went to the American Cancer Society and there were a lot of customers.
As a graduate of Kirkwood, Tschiggfrie knows how important it is to get students involved in activities like this. It's a good way for students to interact with each other and make them feel like they're helping the school's cause.
Tschiggfrie's job with Student Life enables her to organize many of these events. She advises the KAPS, which stands for Kirkwood Activities, Programs and Services. KAPS students earn money while working with other students to plan and present programs, entertainment and other Student Life activities.
This was a very busy time of year for Tschiggfrie and the Student Life department. The Spring Awards Banquet was conducted April 13 and the Indy 500 and NASCAR races are planned for the upcoming months.
Tschiggfrie said she hoped for a turn-out of at least 300 people for the Spring Awards Banquet where students nominated people for over 30 awards, including best male and female adviser. The banquet was held at the Clarion Hotel with a buffet dinner followed by the awards ceremony and a dance.
In August students will donate money to attend two different races. Buses will take several students to the Indy 500 and NASCAR races. The money donated will help pay for speakers to come talk to students at Kirkwood throughout the year.
Students reap the benefits of Student Life during the basketball season. During intermissions of basketball games free food is always given out by the department. Tschiggfrie said this helps put more people in the stands. "Twice as many people come when there's free food involved," said Tschiggfrie.
