Summer greetings from Iowa City
RiverFest
Megan Beuning
Issue date: 4/26/07 Section: Iowa City
When RiverFest began 29 years ago it took place at Hubbard Park, cost $2,500 to organize and hosted 750 people. Today the event takes place at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), costs $20,000 to organize and host thousands of people. The event has become one of the most successful University of Iowa student organization events in Iowa City.
Executive Director Kaitlyn Moore stated, "This is the 29th year of RiverFest and it started out as an 11-day festival. The goal that our executive committee had in mind this year for RiverFest was to bring it back to the students and to appeal to them." The student-organized concert takes place on April 27-28. The festivity is open to everyone and runs from 5 - 11 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
The event features free music, free rides and favorable local food. Moore stated, "There will be over 10 bands performing." Some of the groups include The Critical Hour, Twenty Something White Guys and Fileo. To find out more about the bands that will be performing visit www.uiowa.edu/riverfest/music.html.
In addition to musical entertainment, RiverFest also provides several free attractions. These include a velcro wall, mechanical bull, speed pitch, joust (American Gladiators), rock climbing wall and several others.
Along with the free entertainment, there will be free drawings for prizes that are donated by local businesses. With all of these attractions Moore is hoping that students will relax and have fun before the stress of finals week. Moore explained, "We are really excited about this year's event." In the event of rain, RiverFest will be held in the IMU's ballroom.
