For some students, participating in an internship is just another requirement to graduate but many agree when finished that the experience is one they wouldn't want to be without.

Many programs offered at Kirkwood Community College, such as Health Sciences, Business, Education, Communications Media/Public Relations, Agriculture, Animal Health, Interior Design and Industrial Technology have degree requirements based on a core curriculum and internships.

The internships range from 16 contact hours up to as many as 240 hours for some degrees and may even be required for accreditation for various degrees. Dawn Eitel, program director for the medical assisting program, explained, "Externships demonstrate to students how what is learned in lecture and lab and how they work in the field with patients." Eitel went on to clarify that the word externship and internship are interchangeable in the medical field.

Jamie Robinson, a medical assisting major graduating this May, recently finished her externship and recommends students take one. "I think that, for one, I really enjoyed it," said Robinson. "It allowed me to apply the concepts to real life and address any concerns I may have had and build confidence." Referring to the difference between attending classes all day and being on her feet all day at work, Robinson stated that the "adjustment period was exhausting" and she advises students to finish other classes before starting an internship and be time conscious.

Students who want an internship can also enroll in Job Seeking Skills, a one credit class. The class assists students in preparing for an internship in area such as writing resumes and utilizing Kirkwood's job search assistance services. Other classes Student Development offers include College 101, Stress Management and Career Decision Making. For more information students can call Morris Pounds at 378-8595.
