The two 18-year-old cousins were found stabbed and beaten to death in Edmondson's apartment last April 23, 2006. Kyle Marin, 20, who turned himself in at the Linn County Jail after the bodies were discovered, was arrested and now stands trial on May 21 for two counts of first-degree murder.
A stereo poured out songs, like Amazing Grace, that quieted the large crowd as they gathered on the lawn in front of Edmondson's previous College Park apartment. The vigil was arranged by Kirkwood student Megan Hepker, education, who was a close friend of Edmondson. "I wanted to do this vigil as a way to remember the girls and have people come together and lean on each other again," said Hepker, with tears falling down her face.
Several people spoke briefly about the characteristics they missed most about the girls and thanked the group of supporters for taking time to remember "Kat and Molly." The supporters also bowed their heads in prayer and thanked God for the hearts that continue to show support and compassion. Edmondson's father, Alan, softly spoke about his thankfulness for support but was cut short due to the intense emotions that overcame him.
Neil Stradt, business administration, who handed out candles at the vigil said, "If you can be remembered by one person you are immortalized and live forever." He knew Edmondson from a Spanish class last year.
Solon classmate Lea Matthes described Hill as the most awesome person and said, "She should never be forgotten and I think it's important to remember and celebrate their lives."`
Cousin to both girls, Jessica Young, said the gathering was also a good way to raise awareness of crime victims and added that Cedar Rapids is hosting several events for this week's Crime Awareness Week. Wailing by Edmondson's mother, Julie, broke the silence as Young embraced her during an emotional goodbye.
Young composed herself and added, "It is still very hard for the family but we're a strong family and if we keep talking instead of holding it in we'll get through this." Young also noted that the family follows the trial of Kyle Marin closely and the Victim's Advocate Group has helped the family tremendously.
"One thing that Kat and Molly would want is for all of you to go home and hug your friends and family a little tighter tonight," said Hepker.
