Education and work experience are two important factors that employers consider when looking at a potential employee. Students at Kirkwood Community College are achieving an education but the work experience may be a little harder to find. With the semester coming to a close, many summer job positions and internships are being advertised with college students in mind.
Career Services Coordinator Clay Farebrother said that summer jobs and internships are great resume builders. He explained that most companies want to know a potential employee can handle a job by showing up on time having good work attendance - traits students can learn by earning work experience in the summer and by doing internships.
"The money alone is niceā¦but to have a resume with job history is what you would want to create," said Farebrother.
One resource that many students may not know about is the Kirkwood Jobs Web site. Any current student or Kirkwood alum can register to use the site for free by going to www.kirkwood.edu/jobs, or www.collegecentral.com/kirkwood/, to search for jobs and internships that are available. Farebrother said there are currently 1,800 students and alumni registered to use the site, which offers many different features. One of these features includes the option for students to upload their resume, search for jobs that are part-time, fulltime, or that are available for the summer or an internship.
Farebrother also said that he can go through and refer resumes that are uploaded on the Web site to companies that are looking for students with certain degrees or qualifications. This site is different than other sites, like Monster.com or even Corridor Careers.com, because of the resume referral ability. Also businesses can post job opportunities and internships for free.
Farebrother also noted that summer is the time when businesses start advertising open positions. He said that Kirkwood students have an advantage over many other colleges in the area because students get degrees sooner and are ready to start in entry-level positions, in which businesses can train the employees. Many businesses like the fact that Kirkwood students live in Cedar Rapids year round.
For students who are sticking around campus for the summer, the Learning Services Department is looking for student tutors. Mike Scallon, support services coordinator, said there may be as many as 50 to 90 positions available for current credit students to tutor other students at an hourly pay of $7.50. Tutors must have a GPA of 3.0 with grades of B+ or higher in some key subject areas.
"The biggest reason to do this is because it is a great resume builder," said Scallon. "[Students] should also realize this works around their schedule because there are no set hours."
Interested students should stop by 133 Linn Hall or check out bulletin boards around campus.
