With finals on the way and summer break in sight, it is hard for many Kirkwood Community College students to stay devoted to their studies. Student Life provides an event every year that gives students a break before diving into finals: Spring Fling.
"The Spring Fling is an opportunity for students to get outside, meet new people and enjoy the weather while also relieving some stress as finals approach," said Seth Vander Tuig, admissions/student life adviser.
This year's theme is "Sun, Sand and Surf," and is a three-day event (May 1-3) that will be held in Iowa Hall.
From 11a.m.-noon on May 1, KAPS will be sponsoring a jazz band, free hotdogs and sno cones, free t-shirts, prizes and refreshments and a volleyball game at the Rec Center from 4 to 8 p.m.
From 11 a.m.-noon May 2 Kirkwood Student Ambassadors will be sponsoring a limbo contest, free walking tacos and prizes.
From 11 a.m.-noon May 3 Student Senate will be sponsoring "schoolhouse jazz," free dilly bars, free prizes and giveaways.
Kirkwood understands the students' need for a break after months of classes. They provide a variety of opportunities for students to get out of the books, relax and have fun whether it's between classes or an evening event.
For many Kirkwood students finals week brings a lot of stress and hours of studying; and the Kirkwood Campus Nurse said students need to take breaks .
"Exercise plays a large role in reducing stress," said Campus Nurse Lori Jeppson. "It releases endorphins and generally the more physically fit you are the less stress related problems you will have."
Jeppson stated that exercise is a good emotional outlet and increases self-esteem. "Don't just sit and put your head in a book for hours. Get up and take a 15 to 30 minute break, go for a walk and eat healthy. If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you," said Jeppson.
Students should take advantage of Spring Fling because everything free and it is also a great way to earn prizes through giveaways. It is also an opportunity to hang out with friends while relaxing. This break from studying may actually help students with their finals in the long run.
