The necessities of life include food, water and shelter. For students at Kirkwood Community College necessities may include pizza, cell phones and the EagleCard.
The blue card identifies a person as a Kirkwood student and allows access to facilities ranging from the library to the sports facilities at the Rec Center and entertainment events. Students are able to use the card to pay for daily expenses such as food at Sammy's Kafé and school supplies at the Bookstore.
Students can obtain a card at any of the EagleCard Centers. The EagleCard Center is located at the C-store in Benton Hall, in the Rec Center, the Iowa City Bookstore and at any of the Kirkwood County Center locations. At the centers the students have their photo taken and a card made for them on the spot.
A set of numbers on the front of the card and the barcode on the back of the card represent a student's library identification.
Library Director Arron Wings said, "You need the EagleCard to checkout materials from the library."
Wings also said students can check out laptops and that, "…if you are going to check out a laptop computer you actually have to leave your EagleCard with the librarian. Laptops can be checked out for two hours and can't leave the library."
The magnetic strip on the card allows students to use the EagleCard like a debit card. Students can add money to the card several ways. First by using any of the EagleCard Deposit Machines. These 'cash to card' machines allow students to use cash and debit/credit cards to deposit money to their EagleCard accounts. Money can also be deposited at any EagleCard Center.
Students can use their EagleCard to purchase vending machine items. The EagleCard is usable with a 5 percent discount at the C-store, the Class Act restaurant and Sammy's Kafé where students can purchase meal plans for lunch and evenings.
EagleCards are used for other events as well. Part Time Office Coordinator in Student Life Mary Huffman said, "Most events on campus are free. You do need your EagleCard to get into basketball games and volleyball games. At this time baseball and softball games are free admittance."
