"We've had several accidents here on campus. Most stem from driving way too fast while in the parking lots," said Director of Security Tom Spartz, in regard to students driving on campus. Approximately 15,060 students attended Kirkwood last year. That can quickly fill a parking lot and increase the risks for an accident to take place.
"Normally we just have some fender-benders but there have been times when a great deal of damage has been done to the car."
Security does their best to limit these incidents by patrolling the lots and handing out tickets when necessary for violations such as speeding and illegal parking, he said. "A lot of students don't really know the rules around here yet and are surprised when I have to ticket them," said Security Officer Keith. All the rules are listed in the Kirkwood handbook that the students receive before the beginning of the semester.
Spartz recounted an incident last spring when a young woman was speeding through the parking lot right outside Linn Hall. Another vehicle was pulling out and she hit it with enough force to turn the vehicle completely around. Spartz said there is no guarantee that if she had been going the 15 mile per hour limit that she would have avoided the accident but the damages to her car would not have been so costly.
