Lamb said in his new job he will be formulating classes, making sure the curriculum fits the needs of students and working on budgeting.
Lamb said his goal at KCC is to "make [Kirkwood] even better than it already is." He said he would also like to see more availability and access to courses and programs to fit diverse and innovative learning.
Though enrollment fluctuates every year, Lamb said that enrollment numbers aren't KCC's mission; Kirkwood's goal is to meet the needs of the community.
Since starting his job on July 1, he said he has done a lot of reading on policy and getting to know people around the campus. He said his biggest challenge this year will be connecting with the large number of faculty. With nine different Kirkwood locations in surrounding towns, communication between the locations will prove to be a difficult task, he added. Lamb said this year he is most excited about "the first day of the semester."
Lamb came to KCC after 19 years at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, where he was the dean of science and mathematics. Lamb has been involved in education in Kansas community colleges since 1977, including being a journalism teacher at Coffeyville Community College.
Lamb said the Iowa community college education is similar to Kansas. He went on to say that the only difference he has noticed so far has been the fewer number of colleges in Iowa compared to the number of colleges located in Kansas.
